Subject: Where are they now?? Ottawa band edition.
Date: 02/29/12 8:38 pm

I was recently having a nostalgic moment talking to a friend about all of the sweet shows I used to go to in high school (and my first year or two of university). This got me thinking about all of the awesome Ottawa bands I was into (and I am still into) and got to see over the years. So now I'm wondering.....where are some of these bands now? What are the members up to? Are any of them in new bands? I'm just going to list a bunch of the bands I can think of but there are definitely more so feel free to add more. Also, I know know what some members of a few of these bands are up to now, but I am listening them anyway.

Avenger
The Transit
Miles Between us
Van Johnson
Three Orange Whips
Sick Washington
Us Against Them
7 Layers
Viscera's Recital
Hartsfield (sp?)
Outnumbered
If Tomorrow Comes
Thin Ice
Rivals
Brights (does PJ still have this project going?)
Robot Kill City
Is Grace Enough
For The Mathematics
Buried Inside
Million Dollar Marxists
Fox On The Run
Pleased (I know they weren't from Ottawa but they played there a few times and they were AWESOME)

This list is getting too long and I still have a lot to go. Basically, I am going to list any band from Ottawa (and surrounding areas) that existed from 2001-2005. So just inform me of what those bands are up to. I also forget the names of some so just post any bands. Also, didn't someone try to curate a list of past Ottawa bands on a website at some point, or am I making that up?

us against them pretty much became hartsfield, but im sure you knew that. i went to hartsfield's first show but it was advertised on the flyer as us against them. the singer from hartsfield then played guitar/sang in a band called "smaller on you" who were pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi4lG9tL0vg dont know if that band is still around

didnt 7 layers members go onto play in the fully down? the fully down is also broken up though im pretty sure

the (original) vocalist of is grace enough is the vocalist of liferuiner

the guitarist (and i think he was lead vocalist for a bit) of if tomorrow comes if the vocalist of death metal band immersed

thats all i can really contribute i think.

good thread

All of the Million Dollar Marxists' last lineup are still active in a pile of other bands - white wires, boyhood, Steve adamyk band, male nurse, mothers children to name a few.

Pat Lam (Hartsfield dummer) went on to drum for the Bella Bombs (ex Spygirl/Syrens/Nags), and currently drums for In Heat (with other past members of Bella Bombs and the Chelseas).

a lot of ottawa punks have done really well for themselves, whether they've opened up successful stores, businesses, pursued higher education, became professionals, etc. a lot of dudes in the original list posted have turned into well educated, sharp individuals who become more of a nightmare for the status quo with every passing day.

take that, suburban flotsam

Van Johnson
dave above can probably elaborate further, but bill formed Embassies of Denmark initially after vaj's demise (although im pretty sure theyre done now):
http://www.myspace.com/embassiesofdenmark

vocalist nick did alot of work with various independent theatre groups in ottawa after, im not sure if hes still affiliated with the Company of Fools troupe though:
http://fools.ca/about/NickDiGaetano

Sick Washington
im pretty sure only played a handful of shows, but singer steve went on to form and front the Love Machine before moving to Toronto. he was only featured on the first 2 song demo that the band no long presents in any format so youll probably never hear it, in spite of 'bad girl' being one of their best tracks.

Us Against Them
as stated, became Hartsfield.

Viscera's Recital
drummer mike last i checked was looking to step away from drumming and play guitar or bass on a noisy new project...he also now runs Darkside Productions recording studio in ottawa:
http://www.darksideproductions.ca

Hartsfield
pat's history has been covered well (minus his involvement in the shortlived Lights Over Arkham: http://www.myspace.com/lightsoverarkham)

front man jon desilva, after fronting smaller on you until their end, started producing beats and founded Philly Moves: http://www.myspace.com/phillymoves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eaQweit7tY

bassist/vocalist eric gilmore
now fronts eric gilmore and the mad hatters, an offshoot of the solo thing hed been doing previous to that:
http://www.myspace.com/hatters

If Tomorrow Comes
vocalist/guitarist mariful went on to form Enough Said before the band changed their name to I Refuse, and guitarist/vocalist Mark Phillips went on to form Immersed who recently signed to Unique Leader recs:
http://www.myspace.com/immerseddeathmetal

xThin Icex
PJ Catsiyannis went on to form Rivals.

Rivals
vocalist PJ Catsiyannis went on to form Brights.
(rip seb!)

Is Grace Enough
all IGE tracks can be found posted on Marco from We Were Sharks' youtube account here: http://www.youtube.com/user/iamdurMarco with every live video we could ever find posted on my youtube account here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/wefalldown

immediately after the band's demise 3/5ths of the band went on to form afterallyourplanetsdone:
http://www.myspace.com/afterallyourplanetsdone

the only IGE members still actively playing music are drummer will plummer who, after the demise of smaller on you who he formed with jon from hartsfield, now plays for We Were Sharks:
http://www.weweresharks.com

and vocalist jonny who recently resurrected liferuiner again:
http://www.myspace.com/therealliferuiner

i went on to play bass for I Call This Safety before our dismantling in 2010:
http://www.myspace.com/icallthissafety

For The Mathematics
the band's bassist on their last two releases, liam jaegar, went on to form the Balconies, playing drums alongside girlfriend jacquie from Amos the Transparent: http://thebalconiesband.wordpress.com

Buried Inside
andrew tweedy went on to do some solo work: http://www.myspace.com/andrewtweedy

matias who played guitar on the band's last two cds i think has spearheaded organizing the Ottawa Explosion fest that happens in the summer.

last i talked to steve he was super pumped to unveil a new project that he and a couple other BI members had been working on...still havent heard anything about the progress there though.

Pleased
hailed from quebec city, mp3s can still be found here if you werent able to get their 3 song demo they gave out at their shows:
http://www.purevolume.com/pleased

former bassist stephanie is the only member i still have contact with, and went on to form (most recently) attack of the microphone: http://www.myspace.com/attackofthemicrophone

also, the mentioned ottawa band graveyard is actually the Ottawa Obituary here: http://ottawaobituary.blogspot.com/

when im off this summer from school im planning on furthering this idea to intensively cover the past ottawa scene in a similar but more comprehensive fashion under the moniker 'deadottawa'.
ill be sure to post when material is made available.

Emmanuel aka Lips aka Skid Vicious who played guitar on the band's last two cds i think has spearheaded organizing the Ottawa Explosion fest that happens in the summer.

He also co-organises the Shameless DJ night at babylon and plays in a couple bands .

Smaller on You isn't around anymore. The drummer now plays in We Were Sharks and the other guitarist raps in Philly Moves.

Just a quick correction. She played in Jetplanes of Abraham, not Amos the Transparent.
