I am currently addicted to both bands, and similar sounding bands like Exploding White Mice, Asexuals and The Nils

Especially:

Anybody else into any of these bands?

Was just listening to a bunch of killjoys the other day. Also have been covering Fountains by The Nils in one of our bands and I'm downloading the Asexuals right now since I've never heard them. As for the Goo Goo Dolls - I've heard this myth that they used to be good, but I still find it really hard to believe. Were you at their show last night?

sick song. first heard it back in like middle school on the first big shiny tunes compilation. goo goo dolls i actually prefer their hit songs (iris, slide, name, black balloon etc).

i used to have this sick compilation from the 90s (96-97?) where all the bands were from ontario and they all either sounded like the killjoys or were skate punk. a bunch of good obscure bands, wish i still had it.

i dont see how the 3 other bands you mentioned are like killjoys and goo goo dolls though. though to be fair, i didnt listen to much of their stuff.

bands like killjoys were like the skate punk/pop punk bands of the grunge scene. taking an inherently aggressive style and adding melody to it.

people should post more bands like killjoys, i have a secret fetish for 90s music.

Love the Killjoys! One of my buddys at work was good friends with them back in the day...said they got screwed over by their record company and saw no royalties for any of their shit really.

The Goo Goo Dolls have some alright songs but I never got into them much.

I also have a fetish for 90's music, especially in the "alternative" realm a la Bush X, Blind Melon etc.

I don't even know how to express how much I love these bands. This is one of the best threads EVER on here.

Goo Goo dolls, Killjoys, Asexuals, Nils, Replacements, Soul asylum, Lemonheads etc. Have many similarities. Most started off harder and got poppier around the same time periods. And they all kick serious ass.

whoever asked about Asexuals being good.

Killjoys: yes
- loved "gimme five": "like a girl Jesus", "spacegirl", rave+drool", etc
- "today I hate everyone"

Goo goo dolls: no
- except maybe "a boy named goo", anything else after I thought really blew.

Nice!! Such a good Nils song! Asexuals rule. Their first E.P. was hardcore punk released in 84. They slowly went the same way The Replacements and other hardcore bands did, doing a more poppy alternative-esc punk style. Check out their whole discography. Fitzjoy is currently my favourite record by them. It's super poppy and so good. Black Sugar and Underground are my two favourite jams on that album.

and dude, you HAVE to check out old Goo Goo Dolls! Superstar Car Wash is my favourite album by them (the album cover I posted above). Extremely catchy punk rock. The bassist Robby Takac did more singing in their old material and he has a really good raspy/snotty voice. One of the best of that era. John Rzeznik, the guitarist, does most of the singing in their later material like Dizzy Up The Girl and after when they went completely alternative/pop-rock/whatever. Before that they had a good mix of both singing, with Robby singing a lot more. Check their wikipedia page and download all their albums. A Boy Named Goo (the one after Superstar Car Wash) was the last album that really had a punk rock influence, after that was Dizzy Up The Girl where they went completely alternative, and ditched the aggressive punk rock tendencies. Still a good album, but everything pre-Dizzy Up Th Girl is incredible punk rock, especially Superstar Car Wash.

Also everyone HAS to check out Exploding White Mice. One of the best Australian punk rock bands to ever exist, and one of my favourite bands. They have a bunch of full length LPs, and 7" singles out since the early 80s. Hard to find their stuff online except their two early records Blaze of Glory and In A Nest of Viper. I can get you Collateral Damage and We Walk Alone two of their later albums and some of my favourite stuff by them.

Early on Goo Goo Dolls were constantly being called out as a Replacements rip-off band.

Check this out and decide for yourself.

That song is from the third lp. Their first three lp's were on METAL BLADE of all labels.

Also, check out the early Soul Asylum stuff. There are some gems in there. They were on Twin/Tone along with the Replacements.
