Unpacking a box of tapes today, I discovered a whole bunch of things I hadn't heard in ages, including my long lost (dubbed) copy of "Nutmeg" by Herbal Scream, and the Illegal Jazz Poets demo tape.

Herbal Scream is awesome, of course, as much as Matt Deline would like me to destroy my copy of the tape and never say anything about it.

And shit, dude, the Illegal Jazz Poets were probably Ottawa's most criminally underrated band. Even when I was too "punk" to listen to most great non-punk music, I was still somehow smart enough to recognize just how incredibly fun this band was. "Pick It Up" still makes me grin and feel great ten years after I bought it.

Also, I played "Car Bomb" by the Trapt on a radio show I did last week-- that's also awesome. When are they going to reissue their stuff? Did they just do a 7", or was there more? Where's another volume of SMASH THE STATE when you need it?

Furnaceface, Punchbuggy, Pigout, Triphammer, Heavendog, Lumpin Proletariat, Mystic Zealots, Rebo/Brandon Walsh, Claymouth, Poopookaka And The Bum Bums, Deadbeat Dads, Cold Motor Rodent, Frog, Black Triangle, Gizzard, Onesickpuppy, Feed...

...not all those bands were great, but nostalgia sure does make me smile.

The whole Rightwide Records split 7" crew were pretty much the beginning of my life in indie music. Chickpea, Punchbuggy, Crash 13, etc. I still listen to that stuff every once in a while.

don't forget the goddamn wooden stars. they were probably one of best, most original bands of the 1990s

period.
