I'm relatively young, and I read a couple times about a place called Liquid Monkey? I suppose this is an old venue that closed down? could anyone fill me in? where was it located? how big was it? etc.?

(I know that knowing this now is kind of useless, but I'm just curious)

87 George i think...

above a hair salon, who complained about the noise.

it was a skater/hip hop club which had DJs and was cool about having all ages punk shows. maybe 300 capacity...

they had a popular thursday hip-hop night for a summer

los crudos played there. as well as strung out, botch, dillinger escape plan, face to face (i think), and a few other shows

103 murray was the actual address.

my first show was at the liquid monkey. assorted jellybeans were supposed to play but they got stuck in a blizzard and showed up after midnight...

i liked the venue quite a bit. bands probably did too. aside from having to carry gear up two flights of stairs.

good venue. i always liked it in the summer when they would open up the big front window and you could hangout on the sidewalk

highlights: entombed, avail, dep/botch, strung out ("straight edge kids - jumping on a couch")/straight faced (i believe sf played there a good 3 or 4 times in one year. so did bodyjar), guttermouth (remember guy smiley?), sno-jam 3, tfp, probably more i'm forgetting...

I guess it was the "big" place for a little while ... bouncing souls, face to face and avail were the best shows I went to there.

i remeber after that show the guys from digger were being mobbed by girls for their autographs. so one of the guys in the band wanted to sign this girls breasts and was telling her to take her shirt off and such and she's like, "uuugghhh...i'm 15" so his response was "that's okay !!".

just because you're in a band with ex-members of weston doesn't mean you can act like skid row.....

Ah the Lick Mo.
Great venue. Most of my early years were spent going to shows at this venue. Shows too big for the Carleton Place youth center anyway.
Thins I remember about that place.

-seeing someone from my high school at that Assorted Jellybeans show, which was odd, cause as far as we knew, me LaForge and George were the only people in our high school that were into punk rock.
-Getting kicked in the head at that 88 Fingers show during their 3rd song, then feeling like I was gonna pass out for the rest of the set.
-Going to my second show ever, seeing Face To Face. Remember then venue then, when the bar was in the middle of the floor? Still have the shirt I bought at this show.
-Seeing a pimp pulling a hooker along right by us, outside the show.
-Diesel Boy playing like 6 times in a two year period, including the Halloween show, where they dressed up like NoFX (by wearing white t-shirts with "fat mike" and "eric" etc... written on them) and playing a NoFX song. Who remember which one?
-Reset playing about 10 shows there, and me missing all but one of them.

There's probably more that are escaping me right now.
Great venue.

my first show was at the liquid monkey too. snowjam in 1997 when i was 14.

best show was three penny opera/engine down/400 years.
i missed avail and have been kicking myself in the face ever since. seriously. you should see my face. bad news.

i miss getting driven to shows by my parents. and i miss fat wreck bands. and drinking underage. ehh.

yeah, my favourite memory at the liq' mo was seeing avail play there, then hanging out with their weird dancing-guy backup-singer outside the venue. he pulled a knife out and jokingly threatened to "stick" our friend mike digaetano (gnick's little brother) with it. weird dude. though mike wasn't entirely blameless - he kept pestering the guy and asking if he could have his socks.
runner-up favourite liq' mo memory would be standing at the edge of the mosh pit at the los crudos show and having a crowd-surfing tre-c horshoe me around the neck with her crotch when the crowd dropped her. that was the first time we ever met.
